Digital Preservation Games: Do it yourself!
Summary Abstract
This Birds of a Feather (BoF) session offers an interactive space to explore the transformative power of games in digital preservation. I will introduce the inherent value of gamification, demonstrating how it simplifies complex concepts and fosters engagement. This session directly addresses the conference's call for originality and innovation by providing a unique, hands-on approach to learning and community development.
The session will feature a workshop element, where I will share practical insights into tools and resources, including the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) materials and platforms like Twine, empowering attendees to conceptualise their own games. This practical skill-building contributes significantly to the digital preservation field, offering tangible takeaways.
I ran a similar session last month (June 2025) see:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeb2Z3A0zsitdQm1RqBiOP8bMDOhHBkpJoEH7I1vxmK7XxLfg/viewform which was well received and fun, with attendees from Africa, Europe, and the United States. I want to build on this event and make it more interactive.
Crucially, this proposed BoF embodies the iPRES 2025 themes:
• Haerenga (Journey): Participants will embark on a creative journey, learning to design tools that can guide others through preservation challenges.
• Tūtaki (Encounter): This informal gathering facilitates direct encounters, fostering a collaborative environment for brainstorming and idea generation.
• Tūhono (Connect): We will connect theory with practice, enabling attendees to bridge their knowledge gaps and connect with peers to co-create solutions. A key focus will be on connecting diverse perspectives to enhance inclusivity in game design.
By the end of the session, participants will appreciate the value of games, feel more comfortable initiating game creation, and contribute valuable feedback on making digital preservation games more inclusive. The clarity and organisation of ideas will ensure a productive and engaging session, promising significant impact on the community by empowering new creators and promoting diverse engagement.
