The Game of LOCKSS
Summary Abstract
YOUR OBJECTIVE: Plan and launch a sustainable, community-based digital preservation network!
As you move among a community of potential preservation partners, you’ll undertake the essential tasks of creating a governance structure, curating content, setting accessible prices for service and support, and building the relationships needed to launch your network.
There will be setbacks along the way--technical, financial, and human factors are always at play!--but there will also be steady progress in the form of project milestones, relationship-building, and problems solved through collaboration and wise use of resources.
Players have the option to decide if this will be a game with a defined winner (the first person to collect the minimum number of network partners and project milestones and successfully launch their network) or if they'll make it even more true-to-life...by collaborating and sharing resources to ensure every nascent network achieves its goals.
Specifications: 1-6 players. Approximate playing time ~30-60 minutes. Setup includes a game board, action cards, tokens for players and network partners, and a standard six-sided die.
The design of this game is based on the lived experiences of the LOCKSS user community--all of the lessons we have learned over 25+ years of building and sustaining peer-to-peer preservation networks to serve a range of institutions and use cases. We hope players will find that it resonates with their own experiences in planning and carrying out digital preservation projects of all kinds, and that it also helps convey how much it means to have a supportive community that shares in your frustrations as well as your victories, be they small or large.
