Biography
As CEO of Te Reo Irirangi o Te Hiku o Te Ika (Te Hiku Media), I have led a team of dedicated kaimahi to create a suite of ‘te reo Māori’ natural language processing (NLP) tools that can enable the creation of new digital products and services that leverage te reo Māori speech recognition, including a speech-to-text system (audio transcription), text-to-speech system (TTS), and other pronunciation focussed language tools.
The Te Hiku Media Māori language transcription model opens up a range of application opportunities, from the transcription of archival audio recordings to the development of speech interfaces for computers. The Māori language speech-to-text system developed by Te Hiku Media operates with an 8% error rate and outperforms attempts by major international tech companies.
I am an experienced Māori language broadcaster and digital content creator. I have extensive experience digitising tribal content, and advocate for intergenerational transmission of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori. I am passionate about Indigenous data sovereignty, Māori language corpus gathering and Māori language data licensing for speech recognition and AI.
My tribal affiliations include Ngāi Takoto, Ngāti Kahu, Te Rārawa, and Te Aupōuri. I have a practical application of tikanga Māori (cultural practice) and am a proficient speaker of te reo Māori. I was honoured to be elected Chairman of Te Rūnanga o Te Aupōuri, and continue to serve as Chairman of the Rūnanga.
My governance experience also includes being Chairman of Te Whakaruruhau o Ngā Reo Irirangi Māori (The Iwi Radio Network), Deputy Chair of Whakaata Māori (Māori Television).
