Details

In an emergency, timely access to spatial information that can be easily understood is critical to all parties. Among decision support systems, geospatial tools and resources are an integral part of a response. However, communicating spatial information in a fast manner can often be difficult, especially with varying levels of technological expertise. At Selwyn, we wanted to bridge this gap by providing our Civil Defence team with the tools to view live spatial data with ease and use this to infer faster and more decisive decision making.  This project integrated the use of geospatial technology and innovative touch screen hardware to present spatial data in an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). It has further opportunity to work with the field data collection to show important insights for welfare and safety of communities, citizens and infrastructure.  The hardware is a portable 55” Maxhub computer which can be elevated and tilted flat for increased collaboration. On the Maxhub we access our ArcGIS Online organisation and use a number of online cloud-based applications. Using the Maxhub in an EOC we can:  Display live data collected in the field for immediate response.  Draw and edit features using touch screen abilities for communication within the EOC, to fieldworkers and to Regional Council.  Collaborate and make decisions based on spatial data.  Use geospatial tools to give more detailed information to EOC staff.  Using a tool like this, the Civil Defence team has a new edge to interactively manage a situation as it unfolds in a collaborative environment. Leading to a smooth and accelerated decision-making process, which supports our community.
