Enhancing satellite accuracy in Australasia: Improving the accuracy and reliability of satellite-based positioning systems in Australasia with SouthPAN (Southern Positioning Augmentation Network)

Abstract

SouthPAN (Southern Positioning Augmentation Network) is a service being developed by the New Zealand and Australian governments to improve the accuracy and reliability of existing global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). While originally developed to support aviation safety, this technology has wide-ranging potential uses, from crop management to tracking maritime shipments and enabling navigation for drones and other unmanned vehicles. It will improve accuracy for devices capable of receiving a satellite-based positioning signal, unlocking significant benefits for New Zealand and Australia. Early Open Services are currently available for users to access, and once fully operational and certified, SouthPAN will enable aircraft to safely fly in more challenging weather conditions. Combined with other technologies, SouthPAN will support innovation across both countries: from industrial automation, reduced emissions through improved and efficient navigation, and enabling navigation for unmanned aerial vehicles.
