Details

The brief for the Kōtuitui Smart Poles project was to enhance the redevelopment of Naval Point in Lyttelton, support achievement of the redevelopment objectives, and improve the experience of the community who use the area by including a range of smart technology offerings within the Kōtuitui Poles. Key objectives were to: • Improve the experience for users of the area in terms of safety and convenience. • Create greater connectivity for the community, stakeholders, Council and services to the area. • Support improvements in service delivery and infrastructure through increased range of: o data collection ability in the area o information collection and sharing opportunities. o livestreamed visual access to the site. • Trial new, innovative technologies in collaboration with CCHL EIT hub by testing and showcasing these with the community in a real-world setting. The deployment of two Kōtuitui Poles complete with IoT devices enabled a plethora of benefits including, but not limited to, the following: • Free to use Wi-Fi to improve the connectivity within the area and access to services for users. • An AI counting camera for Council use to collect data such as use patterns, pedestrian/vehicle movement for service improvement and city planning applications. • CCTV cameras to support better visibility of the area for Police and improve their ability to monitor and respond to instances of anti-social behaviour in the area. • Speakers for public alerts notifying of important information or use during events in the space. The intention was to trial a range of different features on the first Kōtuitui Poles to understand which ones provide greater benefit to stakeholders and the Council – and then to be able to swap features in and out as different stakeholder needs become apparent, and technologies develop. https://newsline.ccc.govt.nz/news/story/smart-poles-bring-free-wi-fi-and-security-to-naval-point-users https://smartchristchurch.org.nz/project/kotuitui-smart-poles/ https://www.connetics.co.nz/projects/brining-smart-poles-to-christchurch-k%C5%8Dtuitui-smart-poles
