The Future for Local Government review panel delivered its final report in June. They concluded that a strong local government is critical for building community resilience, intergenerational wellbeing and enabling strong local democracies. However, the current system is not fit for the future and isn’t well-placed to meet the challenges we face. Jim’s presentation will focus on the key findings from the Review and the recommendations and opportunities for local and central government to build a stronger future-fit system.

The Future for Local Government Reform

Abstract

The Future for Local Government review panel delivered its final report in June. They concluded that a strong local government is critical for building community resilience, intergenerational wellbeing and enabling strong local democracies. However, the current system is not fit for the future and isn’t well-placed to meet the challenges we face. Jim’s presentation will focus on the key findings from the Review and the recommendations and opportunities for local and central government to build a stronger future-fit system.

Biography

Jim Palmer chaired the panel that undertook a two-year review into the Future for Local Government, which delivered its report in June 2023. He is currently assisting Hasting District Council recover from Cyclone Gabrielle. Jim is also the independent chair of the Greater Christchurch Partnership. In 2021, he retired as chief executive of Waimakariri District Council after 17 years. He is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, with experience as an audit director for Audit New Zealand and the Audit Office. His governance experience includes Chair of Riskpool, Chair of the Kaikōura Earthquake Recovery Steering Group and Chair of the Canterbury Chief Executives Forum.
