Fast & flexible customer feedback

Presentation Full Abstract

Background:
CoreLogic provides property and location data that supports decision making in many industries. Some of customers in the banking industry have limited geospatial capability, despite the intrinsic link between a property’s location, and associated risks. To provide these customers with more detailed insights on property risk we were seeking better ways to present risk data.

The challenge:
New product development can be expensive and risky. Quality customer feedback is critical to mitigating these risks, but the development of proof of concepts can be time consuming. We wanted to create a GIS web application in an efficient way to show clients how they can better understand property risk, but without spending time developing a custom application.

The solution:
We had previously been operating on ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1. Because we are working with client information, we need to have control where the data is stored so we set up an ArcGIS Enterprise 11.2 deployment.
Using this new version allowed us to use out of the box tools to configure a web application in a short period of time, while hosting data locally. It also enabled us to leverage the latest tools and capabilities of the new web map viewer and dashboarding tools. We found the later versions have been a large improvement in the development and configurability of the out of the box functionality. This meant we could create a fully functional proof of concept without writing a single line of code.

Outcome:
We were able to create a fully functional proof of concept for customer testing purposes with only about 10 days of development. This provided the basis for detailed, specific customer feedback that is helping to shape the development roadmap and ensure we can create products that are useful and valuable to customers; solving their risk assessment challenges.

Asking questions during change, Question the lemons

Presentation Full Abstract

TRC's Land Management team had a core business application and reporting tool built in ArcMap that needed to be upgraded to ArcGIS Pro. The orginal ArcMap solution was built as a toolbar, and generated reports that recorded recommendations and processes for Riparian Farm plans based on what was captured by our field staff. The upgrade was expected to fix some of the quirks of the original toolset, and speed up report generation overall. During this upgrade process, we took the opportunity to question our old methodology, looking to simplify data processing where possible, and to improve the overall user experience. The upgrade delivered was able to do away with the toolbar all-together, implementing automated processes built through a combination of Model Builder, Python, Xpressdox and using the Windows task scheduler to run report generations daily. This allowed field staff to directly access the already generated reports for the Riparian Farm Plans, freeing field staff from having to use ArcMap, meaning more time out and about with land owners. The lesson we have taken is ensure we are constantly reviewing and validating how we do things. Just because we have always done things in a particular way in the past, doesn't mean we have to be constrained by that method we looking ahead. In other words, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade and question why you have the lemons.

AWS Serverless Functions for GIS: building a "Single Feature Service"

Presentation Full Abstract

GPSit is involved in the provision of high-quality pdf maps which integrate drone imagery and RTK GNSS survey data as part of the Zespri Cultivar Audit Programme. This involves surveying/flying a kiwifruit orchard over successive years and providing commentary on any structural changes.

We formulated this process in 2003, and have been running it ever since, which has resulted in huge quantities of spatial data hosted on our ArcGIS Online, eventually causing network performance issues when users interact with this information on ArcGIS Pro.

To resolve this we developed a process of quasi-containerisation, whereby users interact with a local copy of the survey data which is synced up to ArcGIS Online when required. This process is run by a series of AWS serverless functions (Lambdas that are organised into Step Functions) which are triggered via webhooks sent out from our CRM. While this solved our initial issue with local performance on ArcGIS Pro and increased our productivity by ~40%, we've come to release the value of AWS' offerings in scalable event-driven process automation. Using Step Functions has allowed the process to be tightly linked to our job pipelines, cheap to run, and scalable enough to cope with temporary surges in activity. This highlights a potential alternative to FME which might benefit other organisations in New Zealand.

ArcGIS Survey123 Site Inspection Report Automation

Presentation Full Abstract

The transport team at Stantec were using pen and paper to go out to site to complete site inspections and then spent hours in the office putting that information into a report. We saw an opportunity to use ArcGIS Survey123 for data collection and Power Automate to automate the report document. When the survey is submitted the. flow is triggered. It uses a Survey123 connection that creates a report and then emails the field worker with the survey report. This survey has been in use since November 2022 and has eliminated the time it took to create a report, saving the worker and the company time and money. The Power Automate flow can be set up to run with any survey and can create multiple reports, report summaries, and email the results to anyone you specify.

Biography

Katie Strohmayer has been at Stantec for almost two years as a Graduate GIS Analyst. She got my bachelors in Geography at the State University of New York at Geneseo. She moved to NZ in June 2020 and has loved it here ever since.

Future Development Strategy Hub Site

Presentation Full Abstract

In this talk, we will introduce the Future Development Strategy Hub Site, a tool designed for both internal and external use across our organization. Previously, our modelling data was managed in spreadsheets, requiring a single person to generate reports, which were often lengthy and complex. This new model transforms our data into hosted feature layers, displayed through themed dashboards accessible via an ArcGIS Hub Site. The hub site not only serves as a central landing page but also allows for varying levels of security, enabling seamless access for different user groups. This innovation is expected to save significant time and empower our teams with readily available information. Used ArcGIS Hub sites in creation of the Future Development Strategy has also inspired the team to create future / upcoming policy documents using ArcGIS StoryMaps, integrating visuals and data in a user-friendly format.

Lessons in crowdsourcing data: Finding New Zealand's Best Pie

Presentation Full Abstract

Lessons in crowd sourcing data from the public using ArcGIS Survey123 and ArcGIS Dashboards. Finding the Best Pie in New Zealand.

Every other cafe or bakery seems to claim they have the "Best Pie in NZ" I set out to develop a system that can quantify this data to identify the "Best Pie" decided by the public rather than a self proclaimed title.

After using Wellington as a test case I have expanded to the rest of the country.

Several lessons were learnt along the way, particularly in managing data collection and cleaning as well as public engagement, display and access to the data once it was collected.

I was able to use specific features in Survey123 Connect to manage user inputs, display data on desktop and mobile devices using ArcGIS Dashboard recent mobile compatibility and finally embed the survey form and dashboard into a website for better accessibility to the data.

Overcoming printing challenges to enable better customer decisions

Presentation Full Abstract

Background:
CoreLogic provides property and location data that supports decision making in many industries. For banks and real estate agencies in particular, static printable map images are required for property reports to support lending decisions and property appraisals.

The challenge:
The static map images presented in these reports are generated from multiple services into a single image output. We combine orthophotography, CoreLogic Basemaps, property boundaries, easement boundaries and land size labels map services to provide a more detailed view of the property in question. With over 50,000 reports being generated per day, the volume posed some significant challenges. The issues included ArcGIS SOC instances not refreshing causing RAM usage to spike, loss of connection to map cache stored in S3 Buckets and most importantly slow performance.

The solution:
Our solution was to separate out the printing server onto its dedicated machine, to separate the mapping and printing workloads. We used the Standard Printing Tools in ArcGIS Server but had to change the recycling settings to refresh each hour and shorten the timeout settings to enforce the ArcSOC instance refresh. Even with the recycle and timeout settings being set, ArcGIS Server would sometimes not adhere to the settings which culminated in setting a windows task scheduler to restart the ArcGIS Server service each night to ensure ArcGIS Server runs efficiently during the day.

The outcome:
With these mitigations in place, the printing server has become stable. All the printing ArcSOCS run without becoming stuck and crashing. We have managed to reduce response times from up to 10 seconds to around 3 seconds and all outputs are printing all the layers requested by the users.
What this means is our customers can rely on CoreLogic reports for fast, detailed property maps that give them more context to make better decisions.
