Transforming data collection with ArcGIS Field Maps and ArcGIS Survey 123

Presentation Full Abstract

NRC have used ArcGIS Field Maps and ArcGIS Survey123 Connect to transform our data collection processes, from before staff leave the office, right through to sending collected data to other systems, making it available for reporting and use far more quickly.

H&S improvements have been brought about with "Before you go" and "Take 5" forms, both created using ArcGIS Survey123 Connect. Our staff are safer in the field, with the combination of the survey forms, webhooks, and using Dashboards for real time monitoring and reporting.

Environmental data collection in the field includes a spectrum of data types. We have built a tool kit with ArcGIS Field Maps, ArcGIS Survey123 Connect and webhooks, to replace our paper forms and manual data entry. Officers can easily find monitoring sites, do data validation, link from one form to another, access in-form help, species lists and much more. The final step is to use automated processes for moving data from GIS to other data systems for long term data storage.

One example is the new Wetland Condition Index survey form. The form was constructed in ArcGIS Survey123 Connect, based on the ‘Handbook for Monitoring Wetland Condition’ – Landcare Research. The WCI survey replaces paper based forms and spreadsheets and maps the wetlands. This provides effective reporting of the condition of wetlands in Northland and the ability to measure success of remediation, and continuous monitoring of wetland areas.

There have been huges benefits to the organisation including – increased efficiency for staff, no more paper based data capture, eliminating manual entry into a database; in the field validation to minimise data errors; timely data availabilty; Field Maps to make sure staff are collecting data from the correct place; improved staff H&S and improved reporting.

Field Tools for Whānau

Presentation Full Abstract

Joe Taurima, a Ngāi Tahu whānau member provides pest control for one of our tribal properties - Kātiki Point. There was an opportunity to use GIS technology to provide our environmental team with more informed and visual reports of his professional shooting operation. Working together, we used field maps that would track his animal kills and encounters, while also collecting key attributes such as species, age, and sex.

Hunting results have been presented in different viewing formats (experience builder, instant apps, and dashboards).

The field app is meeting the original objectives. There is now another objective. Joe would like to use modern technologies to collect environmental characteristics. Joe will attempt to recognise the ability of environmental messages guiding the habits of wild game from his hunting data.

Ko Ngāti Urihia te hapū
I am from Christchurch and have lived there all my life. I am a Geospatial Technician for Ngāi Tahu and have worked there for about 2 years since finishing at the University of Canterbury. The best part of my job is working for my iwi.

Ko Joe Taurima ahau
Ko Ngāi Tahu te iwi
I live in Warrington just north of Dunedin. Owner/operator of a professional shooting business called Mana Wild Game Solutions Ltd. I wanted to provide landowners with more informed and visual reports, so I approached the Ngai Tahu Spatial Mapping team for assistance. Working together we have tweaked an app that is now meeting the original objectives. More advanced objectives are developing.

Leveraging Geospatial Technologies for Digital Enablement

Presentation Full Abstract

Digital enablement is at the core of Tonkin + Taylor's business objectives, and geospatial technology serves as a primary catalyst for this. The 'Site Plan Generator' is an app and workflow which harnesses tools within the Esri suite, including ArcGIS Experience Builder, ArcGIS Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps.  Tailored specifically for the geotechnical discipline, it addresses two primary needs - the production of high-quality outputs without relying on desktop GIS applications, and automation of traditionally paper-based workflows. Investment into developing this has resulted in numerous benefits including: centralisation of data, consistent and high quality client outputs, along with increased efficiency. Critically, the user friendly interface underpinning this process ensures that regardless of the users prior GIS experience, they are enabled to produce quality outputs. This workflow exemplifies how digital enablement can work in practice, and it's potential to enhance business practices.
