Abstract

Biofilm formation in clinical basins remains a persistent challenge in healthcare, contributing to contamination risks and potential healthcare-associated infections. Traditional approaches, such as routine cleaning and chemical disinfection, have limitations in fully controlling biofilm development, particularly in complex basin and waste geometries. Over recent years, innovations in basin design, tapware, and drainage systems have emerged that offer advantages over traditional approaches, targeting biofilm formation at its source and reducing its disturbance during routine use.

This presentation examines these technological advancements, focusing on design features that improve water flow, drainage, and hygiene outcomes in handwash areas. The methodology includes a review of recent product developments, coupled with the evaluation of their implementation in both new build and retrofit healthcare projects. Key considerations include basin geometry, waste positioning, tapware integration, and the use of one-way valve mechanisms in waste systems to minimise backflow and reduce the risk of biofilm disturbance, with the aim of reducing contamination risk while maintaining functionality and compliance with infection prevention protocols.

Results from these applications indicate that thoughtful environmental design can decrease biofilm accumulation and facilitate easier maintenance, supporting overall infection prevention strategies. Observations from multiple projects demonstrate practical benefits for both facility staff and patients, highlighting how environmental considerations complement other IPC measures.

The presentation concludes with recommendations for integrating these design principles into healthcare facilities, emphasizing collaboration between engineers, infection control professionals, and facility planners. By adopting evidence-informed design solutions, healthcare organisations can enhance hygiene outcomes, minimise contamination risks, and support broader infection prevention and control objectives.
