I would like to discuss the relationship between CSSD and IPC. In some hospitals & clinics both private and public there is a divide between CSSD and IPC. I would like to reduce this divide by discussing the working relationship between IPC and CSSD and how with stronger relationships we can reduce Infection rates across our sites.
Focus points

Endoscopy - explore the GENCA/GESA guidelines specifically relating to microbiological testing and water testing. Discussion around IPC review of these results to ensure this process is undertaken correctly and the results are interpretated correctly.

CSSD Department - discuss how IPC can help in this area, focusing on relevant standards, Conducting in house audits and reviews of paperwork and department.

Community oral health - With the new AS-5369 standards now also covering dental discuss major changes and how IPC can assist in this space and ensure compliance to the standards.

Ward sanitizers - Discuss the standards that govern these and discuss what is needed from an IPC perspective to ensure they are safe to use and efficient.

I will discuss the gaps in these areas and give recommendations to how together we can ensure compliance and reduce infections and incidents.
I will be drawing from real life experience and discussing real life problems that occur in these areas.

Conclusion - the take home from this will be for IPC nurses to have a better understanding of the reprocessing industry as a whole. They will have a better understanding of which standards govern these areas so when needed can access them. The IPC nurses will have a better understanding of the gaps that are found in these areas/departments across NZ and will be given the tools to help them identify and overcome these challenges.
