AI Autoclassification in Action
Abstract
This session explores how AI-powered autoclassification gives Councils a new approach to classify files quickly and cost-effectively. This leads to better disposal, more protection and faster access to the right information
We’ll unpack:
• What autoclassification actually is and how it works
• How to start with a small, low-risk pilot
• What real-world results and quality controls look like
• How to build internal capability and reduce consultant dependency
• How to deal with the “automation” that is needed to work at scale to act on the autoclassification to delete, copy, move files and/or add retention and protection labels.

Biography
Sarah Heal and Grant Margison are the co-founders of Information Leadership. Sarah has a background at Archives New Zealand and senior roles in local government. Grant has senior leadership experience in utilities, and a knack for bringing together practical high-tech solutions. Together they built Information Leadership into a nationally recognised leader in information and knowledge management.
They jointly shape strategy, drive innovation, and lead a team of 60 supporting hundreds of customers across Aotearoa with digital workplace solutions that make work safer, smarter, and more efficient. Both are sought-after speakers on digital transformation, privacy, AI, and the future of information governance.
Both have been engaged in how to solve autoclassification – with AI is often seen as the elixir for raising productivity and reducing information management risks. This is despite the well-founded scepticism on how realistic is it to use AI to power the migration and deletion files from informal stores such as OneDrive, ad hoc Teams, file shares, and legacy EDRMS.
